School Places

Our constituency is suffering from a chronic shortage of primary schools, especially in West Norwood, Herne Hill and Brixton.

Many children in the local area are being denied a place at their first choice of school or, in some cases, any suitable place at all.

There is an urgent need for a new primary school to address this ongoing problem.

Your local Conservatives have been anticipating this for a long time and believe the situation is only going to get worse. One of the most important things that can be done now is to identify potential new sites for schools in advance and not after children fail to get a place.

However, the Labour Council recently voted against our proposal to build a new school on the site of the old Knight’s Hill College – supporting instead the construction of storage warehouses.
On Wednesday 15th July, the government allocated
an extra £200 million pounds to address the shortage in these hotspots. The council needs to start thinking further ahead and this includes re-designating new sites such as this one for educational use and not just commercial use.

Two other sites we have identified include
1) The old adventure playground on Railton Road
2) The site currently being vacated by Evelyn Grace Academy on Somerleyton Road.

We will be providing more details about this in the next few days.

We have started a petition to urge the Council to change their mind on this issue and
1) Re-designate these sites for educational use and
2) Build the new primary schools needed in the area.
