There are many wonderful pubs and gastropubs enough to suit all tastes and budgets. Many like the prince regent are child-friendly and welcome families with children. Many changes in law since labour came to power have made it very difficult to run a traditional pub in London. The Beer and Pub association has estimated that pubs are now closing at the rate of 36 a week - five a day. They are paying a heavy price for smoking ban, fragile consumer confidence, ruthless competition from supermarkets and – not least – higher beer taxes imposed by Gordon Brown.
